On Monday, it was revealed that Barack Obama sent a secret letter to Russian “President” Dimitry Medvedev seeking a quid pro quo trade of Russian influence in Iran for the US halting the deployment of the missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. Obama tried to deny his the trade signaled in the letter, later confirming it as an attempt to “reboot” the US’s fragile relationship with Russia.
Sacrificing our allies to please the Russian petro-dicatotors betrays the weakness of Obama’s new foreign policy. Russia has been investing millions in Iran’s nuclear program, and has been increasingly hostile to the former Soviet states. Medvedev greeted Obama’s willingness to negotiate on the missile-defense system warmly, but refused to connect those discussions in any way with Iran. Talking to our enemies is what Obama wanted as his new foreign policy. Well, that’s one thing, but sacrificing our security, and the security of our newly free and prosperous allies is another story all together. It’s a capitulation, and this kind of appeasement can only work to strand ourselves and our allies when defense becomes necessary.
