American Coverage of Iran Elections

Former US Ambassador the UN John Bolton calls the Iranian election a sham at politico, “what was stunning was that the Western media fell for the whole charade, although it was par for reporters whose political bias frequently obscures reality, whether in Iran or America. It was also par for Obama’s style of governance, which views speech making as a relaxing, convenient substitute for presidential action.”

Christopher Hitchens says the “election” was no election at all, “any voting exercise is, by definition, over before it has begun, because the all-powerful Islamic Guardian Council determines well in advance who may or may not “run.” Any newspaper referring to the subsequent proceedings as an election, sometimes complete with ralliespollscounts, and all the rest of it, is the cause of helpless laughter among the ayatollahs.”

Amir Taheri says “no longer can anyone pretend that theocracy and democracy are compatible.” in the Wall Street Journal.

President Obama is set to give a speech on the continuing violence that erupted over the weekend in about an hour (5pm EST). Will he stand up for the democratic process and free and fair elections? Hopenchange fluff is expected, but leadership and support for freedom is necessary from the US.
