California Finanacial Chaos: Tax Refunds on Hold, State Out of Cash

From the AP:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California’s controller says he will begin a 30-day delay on tax refunds and other payments starting Feb. 1 because the state is running out of money.

Controller John Chiang said Friday he must delay $3.7 billion in payments next month because lawmakers have failed to address California’s growing deficit.

With a $41.6 billion shortfall over the next year-and-a-half, the state is on the brink of issuing IOUs. [Read More]

Californians Flee From Our Ever-Growing Nanny State

From the AP:

Since the days of the Gold Rush, California has represented the Promised Land, an image celebrated in the songs of the Beach Boys and embodied by Silicon Valley’s instant millionaires and the young men and women who achieve stardom in Hollywood.

But for many California families last year, tomorrow started somewhere else.

The number of people leaving California for another state outstripped the number moving in from another state during the year ending on July 1, 2008. California lost a net total of 144,000 people during that period — more than any other state, according to census estimates. That is about equal to the population of Syracuse, N.Y.

The state with the next-highest net loss through migration between states was New York, which lost just over 126,000 residents. [Read More]

From PoliticalMavens:

The apparently unlimited appetite of those who believe government is “the solution” has turned both of these states into sinkholes. Yet somehow that reality eludes the do-gooders, the unions, the lobbyists and all the other special interests whose well-being depends on sucking the life out of taxpayers. But as we see, even taxing them at two of the highest rates in the nation hasn’t been enough. Both state governments are besieged with multi-billion dollar deficits–with no relief in sight.

It’s no accident people are leaving both states in droves. [Read More]

With the simultaneous launch of a Facebook group and website, the first slate for the leadership of California College Republicans was announced this morning. Spearheaded by Michael Antonopoulos and Falicia Mandel, the ticket put forward a list of experienced, capable, and energetic candidates.

Under the tag line, Revolutionize CCR, their platform calls for an active grassroots movement using, new media, a local focus, and high-tech communication, to win elections for Republicans across the Golden State.

The Dana Report is proud to endorse Revolutionize CCR. We look forward to the revolution!

California’s Plans to Close Gap Become More Drastic

From Stu Woo at The Wall Street Journal, Yesterday:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s school year could be shortened by a week under increasingly Draconian proposals being considered by state lawmakers seeking to close a projected $42 billion budget shortfall by the middle of next year.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger met with state legislative leaders Thursday to discuss how to close the gap before California runs out of cash in as little as a month. On Tuesday, he vetoed the latest proposal sent to him: an $18-billion package of cuts and taxes put forth by Democrats, who dominate the California legislature. Republicans in the Statehouse have clashed with the Democrats and the Republican governor on their insistence that the budget deficit be resolved without raising taxes. The governor favors raising some taxes but has disagreed with the Democrats on issues such as his insistence for deeper spending cuts. [Read More]

Arnold is Such a Lib Sometimes

From the LA Times:

Wow, has Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger bounced back quickly from the devastation of his good friend John McCain losing the presidential election to this Democrat Barack Obama fellow. (See video below.)

Today at a climate-change summit he’s sponsoring at the Beverly Hilton, where the climate never changes, California’s GOP chief executive, who’s tangled with the nation’s GOP chief executive over environmental issues, sounded downright giddy over the impending coronation of Obama into the White House.

“I’m excited to report,” Schwarzenegger told the session, “that in January all of this will change, because now there is a new administration coming in.”

Schwarzenegger played a videotaped greeting from the president-elect and said the two men were “in sync.” The Ticket has the video greeting below, showing Obama praising several governors’ environmental work, including the Republicans heading up California and Florida.

Our colleague Michael Rothfield has a full story over on L.A. Now.

Next time, lets vote for some real conservatives.

Prop 8 is Not Prop Hate

Efforts by its opponents to characterize it as such are detrimental to their cause, and a slander on supporters of traditional marriage. Many of Proposition 8′s supporters actually support gay marriage, but voted for the Prop because of their opposition to the California Supreme Court’s judicial activism. The others believe that marriage is a meaningful, and important traditional institution that sanctions the union between one man and one woman. Just because Prop 8′s opponents disagree, does not mean that its supporters are bigots.

When the California Supreme court overturned Prop 22 (which won with 61% of the vote), they usurped the will of the people of California, and redefined marriage for the entire state−without even asking the people to accept their decision.

Now Prop 8′s opponents can fight in courts, through legislation, and in the voting booths, but the discussion should be civil. The recent protests in and around Los Angeles have a worrisome message:

The well-funded right-wing campaign of bigotry is trying to push millions of LGBT people back into the closet. We can’t let this happen. Everyone should have the right to marry. The LGBT movement and its allies won same-sex marriage rights and only a militant movement will ultimately prevail. Gay or straight, documented or undocumented; Black, Latino, Asian, Arab or white— Prop. 8 is a slap in the face of equality for everyone. Let’s unite and fight back! An injury to one is an injury to all!

There is no one, who is in any way mainstream, trying to “push millions of LGBT people back in the closet.” And such a position would in fact be bigoted. This is a slander, and apparently a rallying call for ‘a militant movement,’ composed of, among many groups, illegal immigrants (whose connection to the issue is beyond me). Prop 8 was not a “right-wing” proposition. 1 in 4 Barack Obama voters supported Prop 8.

ANSWER LA, the group organizing the protests, is a radical socialist group. It is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and is a vile out-spoken critic of Israel and supporter of Palestinian terror. It is a radical, anti-American group.

What on earth is the gay community doing associating itself with this type of organization? Please let your friends who oppose Prop 8 know the facts. Decent people can disagree, hatred is not acceptable.
