Efforts by its opponents to characterize it as such are detrimental to their cause, and a slander on supporters of traditional marriage. Many of Proposition 8′s supporters actually support gay marriage, but voted for the Prop because of their opposition to the California Supreme Court’s judicial activism. The others believe that marriage is a meaningful, and important traditional institution that sanctions the union between one man and one woman. Just because Prop 8′s opponents disagree, does not mean that its supporters are bigots.
When the California Supreme court overturned Prop 22 (which won with 61% of the vote), they usurped the will of the people of California, and redefined marriage for the entire state−without even asking the people to accept their decision.
Now Prop 8′s opponents can fight in courts, through legislation, and in the voting booths, but the discussion should be civil. The recent protests in and around Los Angeles have a worrisome message:
The well-funded right-wing campaign of bigotry is trying to push millions of LGBT people back into the closet. We can’t let this happen. Everyone should have the right to marry. The LGBT movement and its allies won same-sex marriage rights and only a militant movement will ultimately prevail. Gay or straight, documented or undocumented; Black, Latino, Asian, Arab or white— Prop. 8 is a slap in the face of equality for everyone. Let’s unite and fight back! An injury to one is an injury to all!
There is no one, who is in any way mainstream, trying to “push millions of LGBT people back in the closet.” And such a position would in fact be bigoted. This is a slander, and apparently a rallying call for ‘a militant movement,’ composed of, among many groups, illegal immigrants (whose connection to the issue is beyond me). Prop 8 was not a “right-wing” proposition. 1 in 4 Barack Obama voters supported Prop 8.
ANSWER LA, the group organizing the protests, is a radical socialist group. It is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and is a vile out-spoken critic of Israel and supporter of Palestinian terror. It is a radical, anti-American group.
What on earth is the gay community doing associating itself with this type of organization? Please let your friends who oppose Prop 8 know the facts. Decent people can disagree, hatred is not acceptable.
